No Text Please, We’re Parents

A Map of California

When I visited my parents recently, I sat down with my mother to show her photos on my iPhone.  There were photos from Thanksgiving, from Hanukkah and from my father’s eightieth birthday celebration, along with pictures from back in the summer — some really good shots I took of our family Fathers’ Day brunch in Los Angeles and my nephew’s college graduation dinner.

Although my mother enjoyed the photos, the problem, she says, is that they’re not real.  You can’t touch them, put them in an album, let them gather dust in a closet until you pull them out for special occasions.

I assured her that the photos can be printed and that we would make this happen.

After we got home, I emailed the photos to my wife, who uploaded them to walmart.com.  For about three dollars, Wal-Mart printed them and mailed them out to my parents.

They called…

Places to shop in Delhi on a low-budget

Okay, now that I am going to be on a real tight budget for weeks or may be months to come, I really have to come up with a  ‘I love shopping’ but ‘ I got merely any money in the bank’ plan.

So here it goes, a list of shopping places that serve you the best during those rainy days. Note – These places that I am going to be listing are already known to every Delhite, yeah! a favorite amongst boys too.

1) Sarojani Nagar  Market –  There can be only two types of people who have never heard or  been to this market. a) Ultra-rich,  sliver spoon in the mouth, mall-goer b) never had a g.f or never went out buying things with the women in the family. A complete heaven for all things good (read clothes) Sarojani Nagar has all brands (original/fake) at amazingly unbelievable ‘ you gotta be kidding’ prices. No seriously, I mean it. I bought a Vero Moda LBD ( Little Back Dress) which was priced at Rs 2900 at the Vero Moda store for just Rs 250. Told ya!! Well it was a size M and I fit it into an XS but the tailor fixed it for some Rs 50. Still not a bad deal, huh??!!

So, back to what all is available –  You can choose from a range of dresses (all designers, bling/no-bling, floral, summer, winter, cropped jeans/shorts, pants, chappals, shoes, accessories and all that jazz.

Highly recommended for if you have a shoe fetish, do visit – Stilletoes, Kin’s and Soft & Sleek.  Don’t miss – the flea market on Mondays.

Note- The market has a few brands too and recently a new

mall has been built as well but its nothing compared to the blissful stall hopping feeling, trust on me that.  The market is conveniently located in the vicinity of South Delhi and is quite close to INA metro station. It’s just RS 30 for an auto rickshaw ride from the station.

2) Lajpat Nagar – Okay, now this one just became my favourite. My best friend (Preeti) recently got married and for the past so many months I have been hunting for that perfect attire at the most unbelievable price.  Well, Lajpat Nagar is where my search ended. So, apart from all that junk jewellery (pick any item – bangles, rings, choker, bracelets, anklets and all that jazz for RS  30 only), the market has a host of designer outlets with some really good stuff for ethnic dresses. I picked a neon-coloured semi-stitched lehenga for just RS 4000. There are shops where you can even mix & match kurtas, salwar and dupatta for as low as RS 850 for all three.

What  really attracts you is the wide variety of traditional clothes. One can also self design dresses by choosing  their own dress material.

Highly recommended – The costume jewellery, if there’s a wedding coming up in close relations. The ‘straight from Bangkok ‘ lingerie in all colours and sizes. Don’t really want to spend all that hard-earned money for a day on  ”how did I look?” at some  Band Baaja Baraat?? Hit this amazing store called Wrapd. They offer a wide range of wedding and party wear on rent for both men and women. Designer lehengas, sarees, sherwanis, evening gowns and many more styles.

Do visit their website for more information – http://wrapd.in/

Note-  The market is conveniently located by the Lajpat Nagar Metro Station.

3) Janpath  – As soon as you enter this flea market which stretches from the Outer Circle to Windsor Place, you know you are in for a treat, a visual treat. All those neon bright coloured cigarette styled, harem or pallazo pants displayed on most of the stalls, along with the an array of skirts, denim shirts and my personal favorite cropped shorts tops the list of best bargains in this haven for shopaholics.

Not to forget the outstanding collection of incense oil, sticks, silver jewellery, antique showpieces that every traveller can take home as a souvenir.

Highly recommended – The scrumptious momos at DPauls. The belts & the bags available at the first few stalls in the market which offer you the best bargain and  lastly the wall hangings/hookahs-stands at the antique shops.

Note –  The market is conveniently located in Central Delhi. The nearest metro station is Rajiv Chowk from where it’s just a walking distance to the market.
